Free Online Courses From Nationally and Internationally-Known Universities

In an article in the May 2nd, 2012 edition of the New York Times, in an article entitled,"Harvard and M.I.T. Team Up to Offer Free Online Courses," it was announced that Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were partnering together to create a nonprofit online training site, "edX," allowing anyone to take their Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs), and get a certificate and a grade, but no official credit.

This will compete with a well-funded commercial for-profit MOOC, Coursera, with universities in both the United States, such as Princeton, University of Michigan, University of Washington, Stanford, and 29 other schools from around the world, such as the University of Edinburgh, the University of Melborne, and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
